A LIVELY APPROACH TO MUSIC FOR THE PRE-SCHOOL CHILD.

My name is Jackie and I trained at the Royal Academy of Music. My main instrument is the cello but I also play piano and violin 'badly'.

I have taught music in both primary and secondary schools. Since having my own children who are now 10 and 11 years old I have taught 0-5 year olds in various different capacities. Other than formal qualifications, I have a wealth of experience which i'd like to pass on to the next generation in a fun and exciting way.

Music with Mummy is a structured programme of pre-school music education which was started in Hampshire in 1992. It takes the form of a series of weekly sessions designed specifically for children aged up to five years of age. There are special music sessions for babies from 0 - 12 months old. (No older children can accompany you to these Jolly Babies sessions).

There is a theme to each half term of the Music with Mummy classes and basic musical concepts are introduced such as 'stop' and 'start', 'loud' and 'soft', 'up' and 'down'. In the Three Four Time classes, these musical concepts are developed further to 'high and low', 'slow and fast' and musical terms such as piano, forte, crescendo and diminuendo, are introduced.

Classes are held once a week in term-time only. Sessions last for 30 minutes for Music with Mummy and Jolly Babies (accompanied by an adult) and 45 minutes for Three Four Time (unaccompanied) and are limited to 12 children in each group. Fees are payable each term and available on request and dependant on when you start.

If you wish to register your child, please complete and return the enclosed registration form to Jackie, who can give you further details of term dates, class content and place availability.
The objectives of the classes are:
  • To foster the idea that music is a pleasurable, sociable activity.
  • To encourage listening skills, so essential not only in music, but in all learning.
  • To develop a sense of rhythm, initially (with the babies) through the movement of their mother's body, then through their own movement, and through the use of simple instruments and games.
  • To enhance bonding between parent and child through shared musical experiences.
  • To promote language development.
  • To provide early training in singing.
    To have fun!
Jolly Babies

Jolly Babies is designed for 0-12 months old. It is very simple, very repetitive and great fun. The sessions are pre-booked and held in small groups of 12. This enables babies and mums to get to know each other and make new friends.

We start with a hello song that is the same each week so your baby will quickly get to recognise what is coming next. We then progress into 'action songs', playing small percussion instruments such as maracas, bells, castanets and drums 'bouncing songs', a 'dance', 'lullaby', 'listening music' and a goodbye song that again is the same each week so your baby will recognize that we have finished.

Each of the different sections helps your baby develop in different areas through music and songs. For example, the dance is extremely important in helping your baby with spatial awareness, and bouncing songs help to develop a baby's sense of rhythm.

The listening music section is a time when I will play some classical music to which I will show the babies something visual. This comprises of many different things some of which could be bubbles, parachute, puppets, balloons etc....

The earlier you start sessions with your baby the better, their sense of hearing is one of the first developed in the womb so they are used to hearing music and being bounced around in time to it.
